India’s insurance regulator has approved a broad reform package covering governance, investment, distribution, and policyholder protection. For customers, the most relevant changes are the push toward better grievance redressal, greater transparency in insurance sales, and more help recovering unclaimed insurance money.
The package includes Policyholders’ Education and Protection Fund Regulations, 2026. The new framework is intended to support insurance awareness, policyholder education, grievance handling, and efforts to trace and recover unclaimed amounts.
Why transparency matters at the policy level
Insurance protection depends on more than the headline sum insured. Waiting periods, exclusions, room-rent limits, co-payments, sub-limits, disclosure requirements, and claim conditions can materially change what a policy pays.
Better sales standards help, but policyholders should still read the policy schedule and wording, not only the brochure. Keep the final issued policy, endorsements, premium receipts, and insurer contact details together.
Unclaimed insurance is also a discovery problem
A benefit cannot help a family if nobody knows the policy exists. Long policy terms, changed addresses, outdated bank details, and missing or outdated nominees can all break the trail between an insurer and the rightful beneficiary.
Record each policy number, insurer, coverage type, renewal date, nominee status, and document location in a financial inventory. Never store OTPs, passwords, or payment credentials in that record.
What policyholders can do now
Review active policies once a year and after marriage, divorce, a birth, a death, or a major change in liabilities. Check nominee and contact details with the insurer, understand the clauses that affect claims, and make sure a trusted family member knows where the policy trail begins.
Vashiyat’s insurance analysis can help explain policy wording in plain language, while its financial inventory keeps the policy discoverable. It does not replace the insurer’s records or professional insurance, legal, or financial advice.
