SEBI has revised the nomination framework for demat accounts and mutual-fund folios, with implementation scheduled from 1 September 2026. The changes aim to make nomination easier while reducing the creation of unclaimed assets.

For a new account or folio held by one person, nomination must be provided unless the investor submits the prescribed opt-out declaration. Nomination remains optional for jointly held accounts and folios.

What changes for investors

Investors can name up to three nominees and submit nomination online or offline. Online validation may use a digital signature, Aadhaar-based or another recognized e-sign method, or two-factor authentication using an OTP sent to the registered mobile number and email address.

All joint holders must consent when adding or changing a nominee, regardless of the account’s operating instructions. Regulated entities must also acknowledge every nomination, change, or cancellation request.

Statements and reminders become clearer

Periodic account or holding statements must show either the nominee names or whether a nomination exists. Accounts and folios without a nomination, including those that opted out, will receive twice-yearly email and SMS reminders, plus a first-login prompt explaining the benefits of nomination.

What to review now

List every demat account and mutual-fund folio you hold, then check the nominee recorded with each provider. Review names, allocation shares, contact details, and whether the nomination still reflects your family situation.

A nomination helps the claim process, but your family must also know the account exists. Keep an updated financial inventory alongside nominations and a valid estate plan. Vashiyat helps with discovery and organization; it does not replace a legal will or the records held by your broker, depository participant, AMC, or RTA.
